Out of 15.8 million vehicles in Iran, 11.4 million run on gasoline. On average, this number of vehicles consumes 75 million liters of gasoline on a daily basis, according Donya Khodro, an auto-industry news website, on Friday.
The report follows a recent announcement by the Association of Iranian Automakers and the ministry of industry, mine, and trade that local automakers should focus future production on electric and hybrid vehicles.
In March the Department of Environment’s head, Masoumeh Ebtekar, announced that close to 35 million Iranians are at risk from air pollution. She urged car manufacturers to offer vehicles that meet the Euro-4 fuel quality standard and help curb pollution.
Ebtekar said more than 30 percent of public transport vehicles are outdated and need replacement. She called for replacing dilapidated public vehicles, such as buses and minibuses, and underlined the scrapping of old gas-guzzlers as one of the government’s priorities to help decrease air pollution in the megacities, ILNA reported at the time.
In response to the minister’s comments, Tehran Municipality announced its plans to re-introduce electric trolleybuses to the capital city. The new generation of trolleybuses will join the transport system. Peyman Sanandaji, head of Tehran Bus Company, said 64 new electric buses will operate in the capital from April 20.
In addition, earlier in March President Hassan Rouhani inaugurated two new hybrid cars produced by Iran Khodro. The two plug-in hybrid cars, based on the regular IKCO Runna, were unveiled at the end of a cabinet meeting while the president, in a symbolic gesture, drove the car for a short distance.
The definition of a hybrid car is not very specific. There are many types of hybrid cars available in the market, the most common of which is the “light hybrid”.
Hybrid Electric Vehicles is a second type in which the base of the engine is electric and internal combustion helps recharge the battery.
Full Electric Vehicle’s are another type automobile with no internal combustion and the system of engine is based on the battery use. In this type of vehicle, batteries are located in the trunk.
Every hybrid electric vehicle runs on average 20,000 km year with a maximum consumption of 4 megawatts electricity, meaning 5 km/kwh. Statistically speaking, only 1% of the electricity consumption of the country goes for hybrid electric vehicles.
