In a meeting with Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani on Wednesday in Doha, the Qatari emir said his country is in favor of holding dialogue to find solutions to regional problems.
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani described Tehran-Doha relations as great, saying Iran has been a friendly neighbor since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, IRNA reported. Elsewhere, the Qatari ruler pointed to the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, noting, “Unfortunately some countries in the region backed (former Iraqi dictator) Saddam Hussein and stoked a war that led to devastating consequences for both Iranians and Iraqis.”
Larijani, for his part, underlined the need for improvement of economic ties and stressed the necessity of taking measures to resolve regional issues.
In a separate meeting with his Qatari counterpart Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khulaifi, Larijani called for increased cooperation between the parliaments of Iran and Qatar, emphasizing the significant roles they can play to improve security in the region.
Praising the cooperation between Iranian and Qatari parliaments, Larijani invited his Qatari counterpart to visit Iran. The Qatari lawmaker also urged continued interaction between the two nations at different levels, Fars news agency reported.
Larijani, heading a parliamentary delegation, arrived in the Qatari capital late Tuesday on the second leg of his regional tour, which also took him to Kuwait.
