The speaker of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's parliament, urged cooperation between Iran and India against extremism.
In a meeting with Ambassador to India Gholamreza Ansari in New Delhi on Monday, Sumitra Mahajan expressed satisfaction with the growing Tehran-Delhi relations and said, "The two countries can cooperate in the fight against escalating extremism in the region," IRNA reported.
She called for promotion of relations and exchange of parliamentary delegations between the two states.
The Indian speaker described Iran-India relations as "good" and reiterated that the two nations have enjoyed peaceful and friendly relations over the years.
The ambassador to Delhi, for his part, briefed the Indian official on the status of the Islamic Consultative Assembly in Iran's political system and elaborated on the active role of the parliamentarians in internal and foreign affairs.
Ansari also referred to the resolve of top-ranking officials in both countries to take measures to boost Iran-India relations and stressed reinforcement of mutual ties.
Touching on regional developments, the diplomat expressed pleasure with the similar stances taken by the two countries on various issues, such as the fight against terrorism, and underlined the good cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi to help bring peace and stability to the region.
In addition, he called for greater bilateral parliamentary interactions and stressed the need to establish the India-Iran parliamentary friendship group in the parliament of the South Asian country.
