In his first address to the United Nations, the envoy to the world body said non-compliance of some countries with UN conventions has undermined international peace and security.
Gholamali Khoshroo delivered the speech on Monday on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), as Iran holds the rotating presidency of the organization, IRNA reported.
“The growing tendency in some countries to take unilateral actions and avoid remaining committed to their obligations, particularly under the UN conventions on weapons of mass destruction and the treaties relating to unconventional weapons, terrorism, disputes and human rights, has made peace and security inaccessible to human society,” he said, calling for the adoption of the measures necessary to put an end to unilateral imposition of sanctions against some countries and their officials.
The ambassador referred to the current international threats and challenges, saying they are “multilaterally related” and a major obstacle to “social development and progress”, peace, stability, and the rule of law.
Noting that the United Nations Charter has prohibited the use of force on the pretext of protecting world peace and stability, Khoshroo stressed, “Any military move under the pretext of preventive measures is a flagrant violation of the rules explicitly set out in the UN Charter.”
