The chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said world powers' moves have hindered efforts to ensure lasting security in Afghanistan.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi made the remarks in a meeting with Nicholas Haysom, UN secretary-general's special representative to Afghanistan, in Tehran on Sunday.
He said, "Interventions of major powers in Afghanistan's internal affairs and their support for terrorism over the past two decades are among the key factors behind the failure to establish lasting security in the country," ICANA reported.
Touching on the latest developments in Afghanistan, he continued, "Iran's policy has always been to help the country improve stability and security to achieve economic development and growth."
The parliamentarian said the involvement of all ethnic and political groups in Afghanistan's politics can help reduce the challenges facing the war-wracked country.
The UN envoy, for his part, praised the positive part played by Iran over the past years to help promote stability and security in Afghanistan and said, "Iran's role in the anti-drug campaign (and the fact that it has) hosted Afghan refugees and held and participated in international conferences on the reconstruction of Afghanistan are praiseworthy."
Referring to efforts by the new Afghan administration to overcome enormous challenges, Haysom called for Iran's continued assistance to the Kabul government.
UN Envoy Meets Leader's Adviser
In a separate development, the senior adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution conferred with the UN envoy on Afghanistan on Sunday.
"Afghanistan's challenges should be tackled in the country, by its own people and without foreign countries' intervention," IRNA quoted Ali Akbar Velayati, director of the Center for Strategic Research of the Expediency Council, as saying.
He continued, "Iran and Afghanistan enjoy many similarities and Iran backs unity in the country," adding, "Numerous (Afghan) refugees have immigrated to Iran over the past 40 years and they have been treated properly by the Iranian nation and government."
He went on to say that all neighbors of Afghanistan are prepared to assist the country in dealing with its issues.
The senior official stressed that Iran has always tried to reinforce the legitimate administrations in Afghanistan.
The UN envoy also said, "The United Nations regards Iran and Afghanistan as good friends from political, social and economic viewpoints."
Haysom added that Afghanistan's problems should be resolved through holding dialogue among Afghan internal forces.
