Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei appointed Ali Shamkhani as his political advisor and a member of the Expediency Council, after he stepped down as top security official.
In a decree on Monday, the Leader announced the appointment and wished success for the rear admiral, Leader.ir reported.
Shamkhani gave up his post as secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council after almost a decade.
Ali Akbar Ahmadian, a senior commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, was later appointed as Shamkhani’s replacement by President Ebrahim Raeisi, who heads the SNSC.
In a separate decree, Ayatollah Khamenei appointed Ahmadian as his representative to the SNSC.
The Leader stated that he made the appointment in accordance with Article 176 of Iran's Constitution.
Ayatollah Khamenei also commended and appreciated the "responsible presence and efforts" by Shamkhani during his tenure.
