More than 83,000 head of light livestock have been exported from Iran through Shadegan Port in the southern Khuzestan Province since the beginning of the current Iranian year on March 21, registering a 172% rise compared with the similar period of last year, according to a local official.
“The main export destinations were neighboring countries, Kuwait in particular,” Mostafa Sakrani, the manager of the port, was also quoted as saying by the news portal of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
The official noted that 140 vessels have berthed at the port during the period, registering a 400% year-on-year increase.
Constructed on a 3,000-hectare plot, Shadegan is Khuzestan’s seventh biggest commercial port where container ships of under 500 tons can berth. It has the capacity to handle loading and unloading of 100,000 tons of cargo annually.
Shadegan has two wharfs and two access bridges, 10,000 square meters of docks, together with an administrative office, roofed warehouse, customs and telecom offices, diesel generator and pump buildings, a fire brigade and an emergency unit.
The port became operational in November 2014 and has since created many jobs for local residents.
