Passenger Rail Transport More Than Doubles

Iran’s rail sector transported 14.7 million passengers during the current Iranian year’s first nine months (March 21-Dec. 21, 2021) to register a 110% rise compared with the similar period of last year, a new report released by the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development shows.
According to the report, the number of passenger wagons employed during the period under review reached 2,145, registering a 0.7% year-on-year increase, while the number of locomotives stood at 150.
A 10-year record high for rail transportation was recorded in the first nine months of the fiscal 2019-20 when 21 million passengers commuted via the country’s rail routes.
Iran’s rail network, according to the report, currently stretches over 15,040 kilometers, around 11,738 kilometers of which constitute main routes. 
According to the ministry, the country’s rail sector accounted for 14.5% of passenger transport during the nine months.
