The water stored in Sefidrud Dam in Gilan Province has decreased by 50% compared with the same period of last year, director of operation and maintenance of water and hydroelectric facilities at Gilan Regional Water Company said.
“The dam has 164 million cubic meters of water now while the figure was 324 mcm this time last year,” Omran Momeni was quoted as saying by IRNA.
“Two years ago, at the same time, there was 468 mcm of water in the dam. The current amount of stored water shows a decline of 65% compared to that time,” he added.
Momeni noted that the downtrend in the dam’s water level has been due to climatic conditions and a decline in rainfall across the country in the past few years, especially last year that was the driest in half a century.
Sefidrud Dam is built on the Sefidrud River in the Alborz mountain range, located near Manjil County in the northern province. It was constructed to store water for irrigation and produce hydroelectric power.
The power station has an installed capacity of 87 MW.
It has a capacity to hold 1.75 million cubic meters of water but at present, the dam is less than 10% full.
The largest reservoir dam in Gilan, Sefidrud Dam supplies agricultural water to 172,000 hectares out of a total of 238,000 hectares of paddy fields in the province.
