Imports of 37 types of veterinary medicines have been banned with the aim of supporting domestic production, according to the deputy head of Iran Veterinary Organization, Khaled Khodaverdi.
“The ban has been imposed on imports of five types of antibiotics and 32 multivitamins used in the industry. These items were chosen because the number of producers in the country have risen and they can now adequately meet domestic demand,” he was quoted as saying by IRNA.
Currently, the official added, a total of 190 domestic companies are engaged in the production of veterinary medicines in Iran. Out of the total, 44 produce medicines, eight produce different kinds of vaccines and the rest produce vitamins and supplements.
Khodaverdi noted that domestic production now accounts for 95% of demand for veterinary medicines.
“The quality of local products, the import of foreign counterparts of which was banned, is very high, as several companies export their products to Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan and Afghanistan,” he added.
