Pakistan's Special Representative for Afghanistan Mohammad Sadiq arrived in Tehran late on Saturday for regional consultations.
Wide-ranging talks on the regional situation with Iranian officials is on his agenda, according to the Pakistani Embassy in Tehran.
Sadiq was received by Iran's deputy foreign minister for West Asia, Rasoul Mousavi, upon arrival.
Mousavi said on Twitter that Sadiq is set to hold talks with Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, on Afghan developments in Afghanistan.
This would be Sadiq’s first visit to Iran in this capacity, but Iranian and Pakistani special envoys had already held a meeting on the sidelines of Zarif's visit about five months ago to Islamabad, where the two had reviewed developments, including the process of peace talks in Afghanistan.
Iran and Pakistan both share long borders with Afghanistan and are directly affected by the security situation in the war-torn country.
A civil war is continuing in Afghanistan between government forces and the Taliban insurgents who were toppled from power by the United States in 2001.
