A member of the National Coronavirus Headquarters warned of the start to a fourth peak of Covid-19 infections, as adherence to safety guidelines more than halved across Tehran Province.
Minou Mohrez, an official with the headquarters’ Science Committee, said on Wednesday, “Right now, the alarm has been raised over the start of the fourth peak of the disease,” ISNA reported.
Pointing to a similar pattern of behavior all over the world, Mohrez said, “Every time the virus subsides, the public assumes it’s over and leave home and travel.”
Health Minister Saeed Namaki announced on Wednesday that the observance of coronavirus safety measures had sharply declined from 81% to only 39% in the province of Tehran.
“This is a strong warning that shows we’ll be in a tight spot in the near future. I’ve said this before every peak,” the minister cautioned.
According to Mohrez, if the general public “continues” to disregard social distancing rules, it will soon trigger a fourth wave of infections.
Iran has considerably eased restrictions over the past month, as the country’s overnight fatalities dropped from 500 to below 100.
The Health Ministry reported 6,600 infections on Wednesday, the highest daily tally in over a month, which took the total number of cases to 1.392 million, Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the ministry, said.
Lari said, “Over the past 24 hours, 91 Covid-19 patients lost their lives and the death toll reached 57,651”.
She pointed out that 1.18 million have recovered from the contagious virus since the start of the pandemic and 4,000 remain in critical condition.
“So far, 9.07 million diagnostic tests have been administered nationwide,” the official said.
Around the world, 100.9 million have tested positive for Covid-19 and 2.16 million have lost their lives to the infectious disease.
