Although sugar industry has been severely hit in recent years, “invisible hands” are putting pressure on the government to increase imports of the commodity, the member of Tehran’s Chamber of Commerce, Mine, Industries and Agriculture, Mohammad Mehdi Rasekh, said on Wednesday. “At least 834,000 metric tons of sugar has been imported during the first nine months of the current year,” he was quoted by Eghtesad News as saying noting that domestic capabilities have been severely undermined as a result of what he called “excessive imports of sugar in recent years”.
