The foreign ministry has welcomed the signing of a deal between Afghanistan's rival presidential candidates for a power-sharing government, saying Iran supports peace and stability in Afghanistan.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran, as a neighboring country and a firm supporter of Afghanistan, has always supported peace, stability, and security in Afghanistan through the establishment of an inclusive and powerful government involving all ethnic groups in the country," the foreign ministry said in a statement issued on Monday.

Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah signed a deal on Sunday to share power after months of turmoil over a disputed election that destabilized the nation, Reuters reported.

The power-sharing deal was signed even though the final results of a hotly contested June 14 run-off vote have yet to be released.

As part of that deal, the winner would become the new president and the runner-up would nominate a chief executive with newly expanded powers.
