The United States' military build-up in Iraq shows that it is refocusing its regional security strategy toward confrontation with Iran, a lawmaker said.
"The way American bases in Iraq are being developed indicates a tactical formation that could create tensions between Iran and the US," Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh also told ICANA.
Despite the Iraqi Parliament’s resolution calling for the expulsion of foreign troops, the US has relocated its troops and armament in that country and is even implementing infrastructural development plans in its bases.
Late April, the US government invited contractors capable of designing and building aircraft jets at the Al-Harir military base near Erbil, which is located 115 km from the Iranian border and is the closest US military base to Iran.
Falahatpisheh said the change of strategy happened after Iran attacked a US base in Iraq in response to the assassination of its top commander Major General Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad in early January.
"Americans have by mistake come to the conclusion that Iran's trump card is its missile power and want to restrict it."
He stressed that Iran has other options to stand against the US and the only result of the recent move would lead to the replacement of political dialogue between Tehran and Washington with military dialogue.
