Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said some countries' double standards in the fight against terrorism have strengthened the terrorists in the region.
He made the remarks in a meeting with his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop in New York on Saturday.
The latest regional and international affairs, including the current situation in Iraq, terrorist actions in the region, and the developments in Ukraine, as well as bilateral relations were among topics discussed by the two officials.
Zarif said, "Inappropriate policies over the past few years led to the development of terrorist and extremist groups," adding it is necessary today to devise a unanimous and comprehensive strategy to address the "inhumane phenomenon", IRNA reported.
He expressed satisfaction with the advancements made in Iraq's political process to form the new government and said, "Iran attaches great significance to bilateral relations with Iraq and helps improve security and stability in the friendly and neighborly country."
The two officials exchanged opinions on the predicaments some Iranians face in the process of immigration to Australia.
They also called for consular negotiations to address the problems and help reduce the existing risks.
An Australian consular delegation is scheduled to pay a visit to Tehran on the issue.
****Foreign Intervention Worsens Iraq Situation
Zarif also met UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq Nickolay Mladenov in New York.
Mladenov touched on the tough and complicated situation in Iraq and said, "Foreign intervention in any form aggravates the current circumstances in Iraq," the Mehr news agency reported on Sunday.
The UN official called on the regional countries to closely cooperate to fight terrorism and expressed the UN's readiness to play an effective part in this regard.
Mladenov stressed the need to consider Iraqis' demands in addressing the current crisis and called for more constructive and effective interactions between the world community.
Zarif, for his part, outlined the objectives of his recent visit to Iraq and said stability and security in Iraq and expansion of Tehran-Baghdad relations are strategically important to Iran.
He added, "Iran provided practical support for the nation and the government in Iraq to eliminate the urgent threat posed by the Islamic State terrorists, while other countries were engaged in holding a show conference."
He described continued consultations between the regional countries as necessary to help deal with the threat of terrorism in Iraq.
The senior diplomat reiterated the legitimate political process in Iraq and the nation's will should be respected to help improve the situation in crisis-hit Arab country.
