The new envoy to Rabat officially started his mission in the North African country.
In a meeting on Friday, Ambassador Mohammad Taqi Moayyed submitted his credentials to Moroccan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Mizwar, according to a statement by the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, ISNA reported.
Mizwar expressed congratulations to the new ambassador and said the envoy can help reinforce bilateral relations between the two countries.
Morocco severed diplomatic relations with Tehran in 2009 citing Tehran’s “unacceptable” stance and its alleged intervention in the internal affairs of the Arab country as the reasons for the decision.
In a phone conversation in February 2014, the Moroccan foreign minister and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif agreed to take measures to pave the way for the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two states.
The first signs of repairing bilateral relations appeared in January 2014 when Morocco officially invited Iran to attend a meeting on the Palestinian issue.
The Moroccan minister of communication and spokesperson for the government, Mustapha El Khalfi, participated in a conference of information ministers of Islamic countries in Tehran last December. The visit was described by some analysts as a sign of normalization of mutual ties.
