Removing sulfur dioxide from exhaust gases produced in thermal power plants is not an environment-friendly practice that is why none of these stations in Iran are equipped with special devices that can be installed on smokestacks, the head of Environment Protection Department at the Thermal Power Plants Holding Company said.
“Not only does the process produces gypsum plaster waste that is hazardous for the ecosystem, but it also raises water consumption in the facility by at least 50%,” Sanaz Jafarzadeh was also quoted as saying by Barq News.
“Sulfur removal process from liquefied fuels like mazut and diesel should be done in refineries and not in power plant,” she added, noting that the quality of mazut delivered to thermal power stations is very low, so when it is burnt instead of natural gas, it adds to the air pollution menacing large cities.
The government has approved the Oil Ministry’s proposal to hike natural gas tariffs in the household sector, based on which the vital commodity’ price will rise on average by 50% for heavy consumers compared to last year’s tariffs, the head of the National Iranian Gas Company said.
“The new rates will go into effect on Dec. 11. Higher tariffs are aimed at compensating a part of production and distribution costs and encouraging subscribers to consume less. Heavy consumers, who use more than 500 cubic meters of gas per month, will be levied heavy fines,” Majid Chegeni was also quoted as saying by ISNA.
Imprudent gas customers account for less than 35% of the total number of users, but they gobble up more than 50% of the total gas output supplied to households.
One ton of Iranian catalyst is being used in Russian petrochemical complexes that have also placed new orders to purchase more domestically-made catalysts, the managing director of the National Petrochemical Company said.
“This is the result of negotiations that have been held since March with Russian delegations for the export of Iranian catalyst to Russia,” Morteza Shahmirzaei was also quoted as saying by the Oil Ministry’s news portal.
Earlier this year, NPC signed deals with Russian private petrochemical firms, including SIBUR, to provide them catalysts. SIBUR is one of the world’s fastest-growing petrochemical players and Russia’s leading polymer and rubber manufacturer.
Referring to the quality of Iranian catalysts, the NPC chief said, “Russian firms could not use Chinese catalysts as they did not work in the reactors of petrochemical complexes. However, Iranian catalysts have proved to be of high quality and competitive with the best in the world.”
The strength and longevity of protests led by young women and later joined by young men, which have engulfed Iran since mid-September, suggest that youth grievances go beyond the strict dress code. Years ago, in 2006, I directed the Middle East Youth Research Program at the Brookings Institution’s Wolfensohn Center for Development. In this post, I revisit the topic of youth social exclusion, which a few years later would be recognized as the main impetus to the Arab Spring protests, reads a recent post published by economist Djavad Salehi Isfahani on his weblog. New data on the Purchasing Managers' Index for Iran’s industrial sector show local industries registered lackluster performance in the current Iranian year’s eighth month (Oct. 23-Nov. 21).

The reduction or elimination of poverty, inequality and unemployment is the main goal of development, which individually have a clear correlation.
Easing inequality is desirable, yet low inequality is not synonymous with a suitable livelihood and welfare. A comprehensive welfare would be achieved only when per capita income increases and inequality decreases simultaneously. Therefore, in the absence of high per capita income, low inequality implies the poverty of all individuals and households. That’s why policymakers should improve national production and income while reducing inequality, otherwise the improvement of welfare won’t materialize.

A domestic company has produced a cartoning machine that can handle fragile products and speeds up the packaging process in industries.
The cartoning machine or cartoner picks up a flat carton (known as a blank), erects it into a rectangular shape, arranges the products, places the product into the carton (or fills it through a vertical flow) and closes the carton by using glue or sticking an adhesive tape on the fold-over lid.
“The cartoning machine can pack more than 10 cartons per minute,” Babak Fard-Sadeq, a member of the Board of Directors of Bahrevar Machine Alborz Company, told the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology.
“The cartoner arranges the products in the desired shape and quantity for loading by using the transfer arm that also picks the arranged bundles and puts them into the carton,” he added.
