A partial lunar eclipse will occur tonight at 1722 GMT (21:52:55 Tehran time) and will be visible across the country.

The eclipse will only cover a small part of the Moon’s southern hemisphere and will last for about an hour until 1918 GMT (23:48:10 local time).

Except for the Americas, all four continents will be able to see at least several stages of the astronomical event, IRNA reported.

According to Masoud Atiqi, director of Iran Amateur Astronomy Society, all the lunar eclipses since the total eclipse in September 28, 2015, have been partial or invisible to human eye.

“The Moon will not be shadowed again until January 31, 2018 when a total eclipse is expected to occur,” he said.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into shadow. This can occur only when the sun, Earth, and moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle.
