Cohort Study on Regular Blood Donors

Iran’s Blood Transfusion Organization has initiated a five-year prospective cohort study on the blood samples of regular donors with the aim of investigating the general health and risk of chronic diseases in this group compared to the general population.

Regular blood donors are among the healthiest groups and international studies suggest lower incidence of cardiovascular and malignant diseases and mortality rates in this group, IRNA reported.

According to Mahtab Maqsoudlou, deputy for education and research at the Institute for Transfusion Medicine at the IBTO, hemoglobin fluctuation patterns among 35-70-year-old people with at least two donations per year will be examined during the study.

The research project is conducted under the supervision of the Research and Technology Department of the Health Ministry in cooperation with the Research Center for Digestive and Liver Diseases.
