City, Rural Councils Term Ends in Sept.

The term of the current city and rural councils will end on September 3 unless the Guardians Council approves a proposal by lawmakers to bring the date forward, according to the outgoing chairman of the Tehran City Council.

Addressing the High Council of Provinces, Mehdi Chamran said the proposal suggests ending the current term on August 3 “but the Guardians Council has yet to make a decision,” ILNA reported.

“We (the sitting councilors) will serve dutifully until the end,” he said.

City councils in Iran are in charge of electing the mayor, supervising the municipality and approving its budget.

Tehran City Council comprises 31 members, but according to a 2016 Majlis enactment, the next council will have 10 fewer seats. The incoming council in Tehran is made up of people close to President Hassan Rouhani.
