The rate of criminal activity in the country has decreased by 5% vis-à-vis the previous year, said police deputy for crime, Aria Hajizadeh.

“The rate of uncovering crime has increased by 7% compared to last year,” he said, Mehr News Agency reported.

Armed theft also decreased by 7.5% during the same period. Drug trafficking is the most common crime in Iran.

Iran is a key transit point for drugs from southwest Asia to Europe. It shares a 975-kilometer common border with Afghanistan-the world’s opium capital. Nearly 40% of prisoners in Iran have been convicted on drug-related charges.

According to official figures, Iran has so far lost close to 3,500 police and security officers to the anti-drug campaign that annually costs the nation almost $1 billion.
