Phases 17 and 18 of South Pars Gas Field in the Persian Gulf will be launched officially next month, the deputy for investment at the Industrial Development & Renovation Organization of Iran (IDRO) said on Sunday.

“The two phases, which are already in operation, have a combined gas production capacity of 50 million cubic meters per day," Fardad Daliri was quoted as saying by ISNA.

In addition to sweetening natural gas and separating gas condensates, the phases will produce methane, a chemical compound widely used in petrochemical industries, as well as sulfur.

According to Daliri, phases 17 and 18 have been developed as part of a contract between IDRO and the Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction Company (IOEC) where the former was in charge of onshore engineering tasks and purchasing equipment and the latter developed the offshore platforms.

Asked about the project's investment return and revenues, he noted without elaboration that the costs will be recovered in less than two years.

Daliri said South Pars development is a fruit of expanding the domestic petroleum industry. “The Oil Ministry has drawn on domestic manufacturers' capacity, which shows why the majority of oil equipment is being indigenized."
