A digital hub is to be established at the Maku Free Trade Zone in West Azarbaijan Province to boost e-commerce in the area and promote tech firms in the zone.
Generally, a digital hub is referred to a cluster of technology, digital media and Internet companies working together in an effort to build electronic services and ICT infrastructure in a specific area.
The province's ICT director, Qasem Jalilnejad, said the plan, which entails support for ICT projects, called on tech firms to register proposals with the FTZ, news website Webna reported.
“The plan will create new job opportunities in Maku FTZ and provide technology firms the opportunity to promote their services.”
The zone’s director Gholamreza Soleimani referred to Maku’s fiber-optic network and ICT infrastructure as untapped resources.
“Sharing borders with two neighboring countries, the FTZ is of strategic importance. Technological development can augment Maku’s standing among business owners,” Soleimani said.
Earlier this year a smart customs center was launched in the FTZ which has facilitated trade. Pointing to the center as a successful example of digitalization, Soleimani said that similar projects will be launched soon in the zone.
Maku Free Trade Zone is one of Iran’s lesser-known transit points in the northwest.
Barely 20 kilometers from the Turkish border, Maku hs some plus points including lower custom duties on goods, visa facilities and banking services for foreign firms.
