A shipment of 32,000 smuggled mobile phones was seized in the province of Bushehr in southern Iran.

According to Abbas Nakhaei, an official at the Central Taskforce to Combat the Smuggling of Goods and Foreign Currency, the shipment was dispatched from the UAE and was stopped near the port of Asalouyeh, Mehr News Agency reported.

He noted that the consignment contained mobile phones from the world's top brands, mobile phone accessories, 200 units of LCD televisions, tea and cosmetics.

"The total worth of goods seized is 300 billion rials ($9.9 million at the market exchange rate)," he said, adding that in the past 15 days, three other smuggled consignments were seized in Bushehr and Hormozgan provinces.

The government plans to intensify the crackdown on contraband goods dispatched to Iran via UAE in the current Iranian year (started March 20).
