Nano Coating to Protect Aircraft Body

Iranian researchers have produced a special nanostructured coating that can be used in aircraft bodies to protect them against the elements. The advantage of this coating over conventional coatings is its ultra-light weight.  The research has been carried out at the laboratorial scale and the results can be applied in aerospace systems and sustainable energies, Iran's Nanotechnology Initiative Council reported. The coating was synthesized in this research by using magnetic nanoporous pigments made of iron oxide and its application in protecting aircraft bodies was evaluated by conducting various tests. Based on the results, magnetic nanoporous pigments synthesized in this research revealed an appropriate structure and showed better light sorption to emission ratio than conventional industrial pigments or even carbon black.  In other words, the ratio in the synthesized sample is closer to one compared with that in usual samples. Therefore, these products are good options to be used in the production of thermal coatings in aircrafts. Results of the research have been published in the Journal of Coatings Technology and Research, vol. 12, issue 6, 2015, pp. 1,065-1,071.
