A mobile phone application programming marathon, known as Hackarestan, will be held over three days starting January 27 in Tehran.

The first of its kind, the event will focus on producing software for educational purposes, local technology news website ICTNA reported.

Hackarestan hopes to expand and become a national event where professional programmers can become familiar with the potentials of the tech market.

Enthusiasts will have to participate in teams of three to five. The teams will primarily be assessed by a committee of judges and, upon approval, will be officially invited to take part.

Once they enter the marathon, the teams will not be allowed to exit the premises until the three-day event is over. On the final day, the teams will have to present their applications to the jury.

The top three teams will be granted cash prizes worth 200 million rials ($5,500 at market exchange rate), 100 million rials ($2,700) and 50 million rials ($1,400) respectively.
