Iranian researchers at Imam Khomeini Health Training Center in Ahvaz, southwestern Iran, managed to repair a fractured eye socket using 3D printing technology. Dr. Shahrokh Raisian, who heads the center’s Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, said the 3D printing technology has been used in surgeries and operations for several years, ISNA reported. The probability of errors in old methods used for repairing fractures led to the development of a new idea to reduce errors in the rebuilding process to act as a proper criterion for operations. “The Iranian team used a 3D printing image of a healthy eye, which was obtained by reverse engineering and also CT-Scan of the patient’s face for repairing the fractured eye socket,” Raisian said. “Using a software program, the frame of a healthy eye socket was built and compared with the damaged eye. The pieces of equipment required for the repair were designed in the next phase.”
