Sharif University of Technology hosted a regional coding competition between 880 teams from West Asia in Tehran on Dec. 20-21.
The competition precedes the 43rd round of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC 2019).
According to the event website, icpc.sharif.edu, over 880 teams from the region participated with Iranian teams outperforming their rivals. The top 10 participants were from Iran.
Iranian teams "Kolompeh", "Oh Toh! We're coming" and "Kamerana" from the host university were the top three contestants.
Winners were honored with gold, silver and bronze medals. Teams also won cash prizes ranging between 20 and 50 million rials ($188-$470).
The regional contests are preliminary events to the ACM-ICPC to be held in Porto, Portugal. The ACM-ICPC is slated for March 31-April 5, 2019. The best 140 teams from will compete at the final event.
ACM-ICPC is the premier global programming competition conducted by and for the world’s universities.
During the contest, teams of three students each are given 5 hours to solve between eight and fifteen programming problems. They must submit solutions as programs in C, C++, Java, Python or Kotlin programming languages.
The team that solves the most problems in the fewest attempts in the least cumulative time is the winner.
Iran so far has hosted the competition 20 times.
