SCI Examines Latest Food Price Fluctuations in Iran

The Statistical Center of Iran has released a new report, detailing price changes of food products during the Iranian month ending July 22.

The biggest month-on-month price rise was recorded for eggs with 19.3%. A kilogram of eggs was sold at 93,092 rials (77 cents).

The second and third biggest month-on-month price rises during the period under review were registered for potatoes with 17.6% and oranges with 15.2%.

The retail prices of potatoes increased by 380.4% compared with the same period of last year. A kilogram of potatoes were sold at 77,932 rials (65 cents) to register the highest year-on-year price rise for a food item last month. 

The second and third biggest year-on-year price rises were registered for tomato paste with 240.9% and beef with 111%. 

A kilogram of tomato paste was sold at 218,661 rials ($1.8), beef 909,282 rials ($7.6) and oranges 107,153 rials (89 cents). 

During the fourth Iranian month, prices of onions posted a decrease of 21.8% when compared with the month before. Tomato and cucumber prices also declined by 20.8% and 13.8% respectively month-on-month.   

A kilogram of onions was sold at 35,252 rials (29 cents), tomatoes at 42,806 rials (36 cents) and cucumbers at 38,593 rials (32 cents).

The Consumer Price Index of “Food and Beverages” stood at 219.1 in the month ending July 22, indicating a 1.3% increase compared with the previous month. 

The “Food and Beverages” index registered a year-on-year increase of 71.9% compared with the similar month of last year. 

The CPI of “Food and Beverages” group in the 12-month period ending July 22 increased by 59.6% compared with last year’s corresponding period, SCI reported. 

The overall consumer inflation in Iran registered a year-on-year increase of 48% in the Iranian month (June 22-July 22) compared with the similar month of last year, SCI reported.

CPI (using the Iranian year to March 2017 as the base year) stood at 179.7 in the fourth month of the Iranian year, indicating a 2.8% rise compared with the previous month. 

The goods and services Consumer Price Index in the 12-month period ending July 22 increased by 40.4% compared with last year’s corresponding period. SCI had put the inflation rate for the preceding Iranian month, which ended on June 21, at 37.6%. 

Year-on-year and annual consumer price inflation measured for rural areas indicate higher rates than those in urban areas last month. The index registered a YOY increase of 46.9% for urban areas and 54.3% for rural areas compared with the similar month of last year. 

The overall CPI reached 178.4 for urban households and 186.5 for rural households, indicating an increase of 2.9% for urban areas and 1.8% for rural areas compared with the previous month.

SCI put urban and rural 12-month inflation for the month under review at 39.7% and 44.4% respectively.
