Installed capacity of power plants in Sistan and Baluchestan Province will double to reach 2,685 megawatts in two years, the Energy Minister said Tuesday at a meeting with officials in Zahedan, the provincial capital.
Referring to the existing capacity of the power plants, which is 1,310 MW, Reza Ardakanian said 1,375 MW will be added to generation capacity in the southeastern province by 2021, IRNA reported.
Power plants in the province have been supplied with gas since March 2017 when an extension of the Iran Gas Trunkline 7 started supplying natural gas from Asalouyeh in Bushehr Province to Iranshahr.
Ardakanian said the ministry has carried out projects regarding potable water supply to the desert region, including construction of water supply infrastructure in 2,200 villages and increasing supply via tanker trucks to remote areas not connected to the water network.
“Projects of the Energy Ministry now underway in the province will cost over $1 billion,” he said.
Sistan and Baluchestan is an underdeveloped and poor province and needs money and more attention for developing its energy infrastructure. It is hoped that with the expansion of energy infrastructure other development indices in the province will improve.
