Tehran Mayor Pirouz Hanachi and Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani discussed the capital’s major issues in a meeting on Sunday.
According to Hanachi, traffic congestion and air pollution were the main topics of discussion, ICANA reported.
“Surveys show that over 90% of Tehran's residents consider them the capital’s key problems,” he said.
Figures were also submitted to Larijani, indicating that Tehran needs over 3,000 new buses to properly expand its transportation fleet across the whole city.
“To impose strict conditions on private cars, the public transport needs to offer efficient services to residents,” he said.
The municipality was tasked with presenting a report to the Majlis so as to use parliamentary capabilities in legal and international affairs for implementing the city's key projects.
According to the mayor, the allocation of funds for the development of public transport with the aim of tackling air pollution has been envisioned in next year’s national budget bill.
Hanachi also called for the approval of two bills on value added tax and sustainable financial resources for municipalities that are on the parliament’s agenda.
“Once approved, parts of local taxes would be given to the urban management authority to help solve many of the problems,” he said.
