The entry and presence of American troops in the Middle East were “wrong, illogical and a source of tension” in the first place, a senior Iranian diplomat said in reaction to the planned drawdown of US forces in the region.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi said on Saturday that the US military presence has always been a main cause of instability and insecurity in the region, ISNA reported.
“A careful review of regional developments in recent decades shows that the presence of foreign forces under various pretexts in this important and sensitive region has had no outcome but tension and instability and intensified conflicts,” he said.
US President Donald Trump has begun what will be a total withdrawal of American troops from Syria, declaring on Wednesday they have succeeded in their mission to defeat the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group and were no longer needed in the country.
