As part of a project of the Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO), intercity roads will be equipped with 4,000 new surveillance cameras.
The project, which is financed by the Plan and Budget Organization, is expected to be concluded in 5 years and cost 10 trillion rials ($92 million), board member of RMTO, Faramarz Maddah, said.
"The existing number of surveillance cameras is insufficient to capture the daily traffic violations perpetrated by reckless drivers."
In addition to taking the number plate of violating vehicles, the new cameras will also record traffic flow and road conditions and data will be analyzed and used for future planning.
