As part of a project of the Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO), intercity roads will be equipped with 4,000 new surveillance cameras.
The project, which is financed by the Plan and Budget Organization, is expected to be concluded in 5 years and cost 10 trillion rials ($92 million), board member of RMTO, Faramarz Maddah, said.
"The existing number of surveillance cameras is insufficient to capture the daily traffic violations perpetrated by reckless drivers," Tasnim quoted him as saying.
In addition to taking the number plate of violating vehicles, the new cameras will also record traffic flow and road conditions and data will be analyzed and used for future planning.
As part of an initiative launched in 2016, more than 1,800 new traffic cameras were to be installed on the country's major roadwyas in two years. Of this number 1,100 were installed by late last month with the number of surveillance cameras along the main roads in the country reaching 2,050.
Since the beginning of the current year that ends in March, more than 4.3 million traffic violations have been recorded by the surveillance cameras.
