    Adaptation of Andrey Kurkov’s Bestselling Novel on Stage

    Adaptation of a bestselling novel by Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov is to go on stage at Charsou Hall in Tehran’s City Theater on September 2-9.

    The play “Death and the Penguin,” named after Kurkov’s book with the same name, has been rewritten by dramaturge Mohammad Charmshir and directed by actor and director Payam Dehkordi, Honaronline reported.

    It is about the life of Viktor, an aspiring author in a struggling post-Soviet society, living with his pet penguin. Starting with the intention of writing novels, Victor finds himself writing obituaries for a local newspaper.

    The cast includes Mehran Emambakhsh, Abbas Jamali, Mohammad-Hossein Zigsari, Baran Vaqar-Kashani and Farid Qobadi.

    “Death and the Penguin” was originally published in 1996 in Russian. It is a satirical work with surreal elements and dark humor.

    Following the success of the book, Kurkov wrote a follow up titled “Penguin Lost.”

    Andrey Kurkov, 57, is a Ukrainian novelist and thinker who has written 19 novels and nine books for children.

    The venue is located at Daneshjoo Park, Valiasr conjuncture.
