A freak spring storm hit the north and northwest of the country early this week triggering unseasonable snowfall and low temperatures, causing trouble for daily activities.
Unprecedented for April, the blizzard is expected to persist for a couple of days, meteorologists say. Heavy snow had already covered mountainous areas in Tehran, Qazvin, Zanjan, Semnan, Mazandaran, Golestan, North Khorasan, Tehran, Alborz, Kordestan, Kermanshah and Lorestan provinces. The capital experienced pelting rain and a significant drop in temperature on Monday, which is forecast to continue on Tuesday. Snow, freezing rain and high winds are expected throughout the neighboring cities, Mehr News Agency reported.
Red Crescent Society relief workers are helping the snow-stricken people on roads. Officials have warned the public away from riverbanks and areas vulnerable to flood to prevent any serious loss.
