Bamboo Furniture From Paris to Tehran

A collection of modern furniture designed by architect Bijan Shafei is on display at Art Time Gallery. The furniture is made mainly from bamboo. Items on display include tables, chairs, paravents, lights and cabinets, Honaronline reported. The exhibit, titled ‘From Maison & Objet Paris to Tehran Project’ will run until March 9.  About naming the exhibition Shafei explained that the featured works were displayed last year at Maison & Objet Paris, an international trade fair dedicated to lifestyle fashions and trends reserved for professionals at the convention center of Parc des Expositions in Paris.  “We were at Hall 7 of the fair and presented what we are displaying now,” he said. Shafei’s works are made with engineered bamboo, a low cost product manufactured from bamboo, designed to be a replacement for wood.  “The works received positive feedbacks, because bamboo furniture is usually presented in traditional style. Such works are rare in the world. Their other attractive aspects were design and functionality,” he said. Among Shafei’s work, there are a number of movable, adjustable and foldable items.  “The only products comparable to these items are industrial designs found in planes and trains. The movable furniture was of special interest in the Paris event.” In addition to the collection presented in Paris, the present exhibition includes a number of new items.  Twenty years ago, Shafei, 57, decided to extend his creativity beyond architecture and started producing innovative furniture since past five years. Art Time Gallery is located at No. 14, Neshat Alley, Asef Street in Zafaranieh.
