More than 81 tons of saffron worth around 3.45 trillion rials ($106 million) were exported from Iran to 58 countries in the first half of the current Iranian year (March 21-Sept. 22), according to figures released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration. The UAE with $33.24 million worth of purchases was the biggest customer of Iranian saffron over the period. Other main customers of the product were Hong Kong, Spain, Italy, Germany, Australia, the UK, Bahrain, Belgium, France, Oman, Singapore, the US, Philippines, Kuwait, Iraq, Canada and Poland, Mizan Online reported. Iran is the world’s biggest saffron producer and accounts for more than 90% of the global production. Close to 95% of Iranian saffron are grown in the two provinces of South Khorasan and Khorasan Razavi in northeastern Iran.
