Telecommunication Company of Iran, the country’s only landline service provider, has said it is set to stop issuing paper bills by the end of the current fiscal in March and switch to electronic billing. Instead of issuing paper bills, TCI will send subscribers text messages, Mehr News Agency reported. Subscribers will receive a 24-hour free call gift if they pay the bill online in one  day after receiving the text message. Paper bills are issued by TCI every two months. The pilot phase of the electronic billing scheme was launched in July and six million subscribers with the company are receiving their bill via text messages. The company has 34 million subscribers. According to official reports, Iranians annually use some 25 kilograms of paper per capita. Twelve trees should be felled to make one ton of 100% non-recycled newsprint. In addition to reducing costs for the businesses, one major advantage of switching to electronic billing is contributing to environmental protection by decreasing paper use.
