The Minister of Communication and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi visited Azerbaijan’s International Telecommunications and Information Technologies Exhibition and Conference, known as Bakutel 2016.

Vaezi, who was in Baku for two days, called on President Ilham Aliyev on December 1. The two sides discussed issues of mutual interest, namely venues to broaden technological cooperation, IRNA reported.

The minister briefed the Azeri leader on Iran’s progress in communications and information technology.

Ten Iranian firms had taken part in the 22nd edition of Bakutel to “showcase their latest advances.” The exhibition presented a great opportunity for companies to negotiate business deals with Azeri and other foreign firms, he added.

Aliyev noted that his government is willing to provide the assistance needed to remove obstacles hindering meaningful cooperation between the two neighbors.

Iran and Azerbaijan’s ties have steadily developed in the areas of communications and Internet, Vaezi said, adding that a special sub-committee will be created as part of the joint economic committee to help promote collaboration in the key  telecoms sector.

Documents related to sharing data were signed between the two countries. Other areas the two sides will concentrate on include network security, satellites, postal services and e-commerce.

The Baku event is supported by the United Nations, the International Telecommunication Union, the Regional Commonwealth in the field of Communications (RCC) and the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry.

Bakutel showcases products like communication and networks, devices and accessories, IT infrastructure and data centers, satellite communication and technologies, banking technology and services, security systems, and eLearning, to name a few.

This year the fair brought together over 200 companies from 18 countries, with 40% of the total number of participants being returning exhibitors. Among the participants were leading ICT companies, mobile operators, telecom operators, Internet service providers, system integrators, and distributors of world-famous brands.
