Israeli forces on Thursday shot dead a 32-year-old Palestinian man, leading to fierce clashes in East Beit ul-Muqaddas (Jerusalem).

Consequently, Israel shut down the Al-Aqsa compound for almost an entire day to all visitors. It was the first full closure of the site in 14 years. Late on Thursday the complex was reopened.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas denounced Israel’s actions as “tantamount to a declaration of war” and his Fatah party called for a “day of rage” on Friday, Reuters reported.

Israel claims the 32-year-old Palestinian was suspected of shooting and wounding a far-right Israeli settler who has led a campaign for Jews to be allowed to pray at the Al-Aqsa compound.
