Oman plays a key role in helping settle regional disputes and can contribute to efforts to defuse the Yemen crisis, said the head of the Majlis Research Center.

In a meeting with Omani Parliament Speaker Sheikh Khalid bin Hilal al-Mawal in Muscat on Saturday, Kazem Jalali called for increased efforts to help stop "the bloodshed in Yemen, the killing of defenseless people and the destruction of the country," ICANA reported on Saturday.

Before travelling to Oman, Jalali was in Islamabad, Pakistan to attend the 34th meeting of the executive committee of the PUIC.

The Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) is composed of the parliaments of Organization of Islamic Cooperation members. It was established in Iran in 1999, with its head office based in Tehran.

Referring to the Syria crisis, he said the best way to restore peace and stability to the Arab country is to pave the way for the Syrians to vote to determine their fate.

Jalali also said the Majlis is ready to develop parliamentary ties with Oman.

The top Omani lawmaker voiced pleasure at the July 14 nuclear agreement between Iran and major powers, expressing hope that by the full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the official name of the accord) and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (issued days later to endorse the deal), "the world would witness a new chapter" of relations between Iran and other countries.

He deplored the ongoing conflicts in Yemen and Syria and said the Persian Gulf Arab state will spare no effort to help bring peace and calm to the region.
