Despite the sanctions imposed by the West on Iran’s economy, 800,000 tons of cargo was in transit via railway during the past Iranian year (ended March 20), which shows more than 50% increase compared to the preceding year, managing director of Iranian Railways Mohsen Pour Seyyed Aghaei said on Wednesday.“Rail freight ton-kilometer (TKM) increased from 22. 4 billion tons to 24.4 billion tons during the past year, recording an increase of 9%compared with the preceding year,” he was quoted by Mehr news agency as saying. The official added that there was a decline in the number of rail accidents during the past Iranian year, noting that there were 192 railway accidents last year, while the number was 251 in the preceding year.
