The agriculture sector accounts for 90 percent of the country’s total water consumption, IRNA quoted deputy manager of Iran Water Resources Management Company, Jahngir Habibi as saying. He added that households with 7-8 percent and the industrial sector with 1-2 percent account for the remaining portion of consumption. The government has recently announced plans to promote efficient management of water resources in the agriculture sector amid severe water shortages. As part of the plan, water quotas will be imposed for farmers based on the area of their land and the amount of crops they cultivate.
