Natural gas will soon reach Chabahar Port in Sistan-Baluchestan Province, managing director of Iran Gas Engineering and Development Company said.
Reza Noshadi added that the project to supply gas to Chabahar will be completed in the coming months.
“Southeastern Iran has great potential for economic prosperity and access to natural gas resources can be considered an important step in the development of the region and play an important role in turning Chabahar Port into an important source of income for the country,” the Oil Ministry’s news agency Shana also quoted him as saying.
Explaining the details of the construction project of Iranshahr to Chabahar and Konarak gas pipeline with a total length of 290 km, Noshadi noted that the project has been divided into four sections and all are being implemented simultaneously by four contractors, which has accelerated the work process.
“With the implementation of this project, Chabahar and Konarak power plants, which use liquid fuel, will be supplied with natural gas. The project will also help provide feedstock for Makran industries,” he added.
The completion of gas grid in southeastern regions would be a great boost to Chabahar Port, Iran’s largest ocean port. Chabahar has been officially designated as a free trade and industrial zone by the government.
Sistan-Baluchestan is the second largest province but one of the poorest of the 31 provinces. The underdeveloped region is partially deprived of piped gas, because of which the National Iranian Gas Company supplies households and industries with compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas.
Around 36 million liters of LPG are consumed in the province annually, which can be curbed when pipe-laying projects are complete.
