Iran's Information and Communications Technologies Ministry has announced that by March 2023, all populated villages throughout the country will have access to high-speed internet.
ICT Minister Isa Zarepour told reporters that about 80% of rural areas, each with more than 20 households, are connected to the National Information Network and have internet access, IRIB News reported.
NIN was first proposed in 2005 by the ICT Ministry as an alternative and independent network with content compatible with Islamic values to facilitate Iranian users’ access to indigenous content. After a long-running saga, the project was launched in August 2016.
Based on the Sixth Five-Year Development Plan (2017-22), Iran’s 40,000 populated villages are supposed to be provided with high-speed internet.
