Anti-Smuggling Department of Iran Prosecutor-General’s Office has declared that confiscated smuggled cigarettes and clothes must be torched.
According to a directive by Mohammad Ali Eftekhari, managing director of the Organization for Collection and Sale of State-Owned Properties of Iran, sent to provincial executives, the verdict is definite and irreversible, and all illegal cigarettes and apparel with international brands should be disposed of by July 6.
Provincial directors must directly report to the head of the organization on the implementation of disposal operations, Fars News Agency reported.
Cigarette and apparel top the list of goods smuggled to Iran.
An estimated 6.61 billion cigarettes were smuggled into the country during the last Iranian year that ended on March 20, 2021, which indicate a 35.9% decrease compared with the year before, ISNA reported.
Saeed Jalali Qadiri, the head of Textile and Apparel Production and Exports Union, recently told Mizan Online that close to $1.8 billion worth of contraband apparel enter Iran every year.
