Iran Steel Output Rises 11.3% YOY to 18.6m Tons

Iran is now the world's 10th biggest steel producer

Iranian steel mills produced 18.6 million tons of crude steel during the first eight months of 2020 (January to August), which indicates an 11.3% rise compared with the 2019 corresponding period, the latest report released by the World Steel Association shows.

The country's August output increased 14.6% year-on-year to hit 2.4 million tons, according to the Brussels-based international trade body for the iron and steel industry.

Iran’s world ranking as crude steel producer remains unchanged compared to Worldsteel's previous monthly report that placed the country at 10th place.

The country is placed between Brazil (ninth) with 19.77 million tons of production and Vietnam (11th) with 15.39 million tons, the new report shows.

The world’s 64 steelmakers produced 1.18 billion tons of steel over the eight-month period, down 4.2% YOY.

Global steel output stood at 156.24 million tons in August, indicating a 0.6% increase YOY.

China was the world’s largest crude steel producer with 688.88 million tons of steel output, up 3.7% YOY. The country was followed by India with 61.11 million tons, Japan with 54.72 million tons, the United States with 47.41 million tons, Russia with 46.6 million tons, South Korea with 43.81 million tons and Germany with 22.71 million tons.

Iran’s crude steel output stood at 31.9 million tons in 2019, according to Worldsteel, up 30.1% YOY.

Crude steel is defined as steel in its first solid (or usable) form: ingots and semi-finished products (billets, blooms and slabs). This is not to be confused with liquid steel, which is steel poured.

A recent IMIDRO report on under-construction steel production units indicated a total of 19.1 million tons will be added to Iran’s annual steel production capacity by the time all these units become operational in the fiscal 2023-24.

The addition of 19.1 million tons to the current capacity when under-construction projects come on stream means the aggregate output capacity will reach 54.1 by March 2024, only 900,000 short of the target, for which Iranian steelmakers will have one further year.

The country has been working to increase its iron ore processing capacity, including both DRI and hot-briquetted iron production, to feed its steelmaking expansion target.

1.2m Tons Newly Added to Production Capacity

The second phase of South Kaveh Steel Company with a production capacity of 1.2 million tons of steel ingots was inaugurated on Saturday in a ceremony attended by First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri in Persian Gulf Special Economic Zone, located in the port city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan Province, according to the company’s CEO.

“With the inauguration of this production line, in which Mostazafan Foundation has invested €311 million to date, the ingot production capacity of Kaveh Steel Company has doubled to reach 2.4 million tons per year,” Ali Dehaqin was quoted as saying by IRNA.

As such, said the official, Kaveh Steel Company will now have a 10% share in the country’s overall steel production.

Dehaqin noted that the project has created 800 and 6,400 direct and indirect jobs for the locals respectively.

The first phase of SKSCO with a 1.2 million-ton capacity per year was inaugurated in 2016.

PGSEZ is one of Iran’s most ideal locations for the development of steel industry. It presents many advantages for steel mills such as its strategic location near high seas, which not only reduces transportation costs and facilitates exports, but also helps meet the huge water requirements of the industry.

The first phase of SKSCO’s desalination plant was also completed alongside the first phase of the steel plant.

According to the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization, Iran’s steel production capacity is expected to reach 43.6 million tons by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2021), while the actual production is estimated to hit 31.1 million tons to utilize 71% of the nominal capacity.

Iran aims to become the world’s sixth largest steel producer as per the 20-Year Vision Plan, which targets annual production capacity expansion to 55 million tons and 20-25 million tons of exports per year by 2025.
