Chloran Chemical Company has indigenized one of the most widely used materials needed for water and wastewater treatment.
"Calcium hypochlorite is widely used in the purification of water and wastewater. The substance is used also for bleaching and disinfecting surfaces and equipment,” the managing director of the knowledge-based company said.
Highly soluble in water and alcohol with a strong reaction characteristic, calcium hypochlorite, an inorganic compound, is the main ingredient of commercial products called bleaching powder, chlorine powder, or chlorinated lime, used for water and wastewater treatment, disinfectants for swimming pools, and as a bleaching agent.
“Iran imports calcium hypochlorite from China, India and Japan. With support from relevant state organizations, national needs can be met domestically with the help of our specialists and dependence on imports can end gradually,” ISNA quoted Mohammad Ali Shariat as saying.
Cost Advantage
On advantages of the indigenized product over its foreign peers, he said the chemical made in Iran costs much less and has created the conditions for competition in domestic and foreign markets. He did not elaborate on the price and planned export destinations.
“We intend to increase the volume of exports and emerge as a leading exporter in the region.”
According to Shariat, water and wastewater industries, detergent producers, swimming pools and water parks and all organizations that need to disinfect the environment are among the customers of the compound.
Calcium hypochlorite granules dissolve in water easily and are mainly used in water treatment for disinfection and removal of bacteria, algae and micro-organisms.
Iran’s water supply network stretches over 460,000 kilometers and expanding the grid to rural areas is a government priority.
The wastewater network is about 66,000 kilometers, which carries sewage to 240 treatment facilities to be recycled and reused in industries and for framing. Total sewage treatment capacity is over 11 million cubic meters per day.
Processing wastewater has become fundamental to the growth and development of industries and agriculture. If wastewater is not properly treated it can have consequences on human health and the environment.
Besides contaminating drinking water, it can harm marine and wildlife, expand oxygen depletion, further restrict recreational water use and fish harvesting.
Underground water resources too are depleting rapidly as the water crisis emerges as a real and universal danger. Surface water sources and dams have also been adversely affected due to over consumption and waste.
Wealth of Experience
Established in the Industrial Zone of Semnan Province in 1983, Chloran Chemical Company began its activity as the first private company producing chlorine and its derivatives.
Besides calcium hypochlorite, it also produces caustic soda, chlorine gas, sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid, and calcium chloride, free from impurity and heavy metals, which comply with the national and international standards.
With a wealth of experience and untiring efforts of its personnel, the company is the largest producer in the local chlorine-alkali industry, which supplies raw material to detergent industries, cosmetics, water and waste-water treatment companies, power stations, petrochemical plants plus the key oil and gas industries.
