Portugal Growth Figures ‘No Miracle’

Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa has dismissed suggestions that the Socialist government’s success in reducing the public sector budget deficit last year by more than expected was a “miracle”, TPN reported. He argued that the institutions that had forecasted a much larger deficit had been revealed to be a “monumental flop”. Costa was responding to comments made by Teodora Cardoso, the president of budget watchdog. Cardoso said she doubted the sustainability of the measures that the government had used to narrow the deficit and whether they would continue to yield positive results.
